My understanding limited though it is from what I see talked about it, the artist gets the first pour or very close to that and sometimes paints them themselves. Also, the artist will have specific artist's one or two usually and they will do the prototypes. From the rest are numbered according to addition size. I hope I have made some sense. People also can buy blank silicone dolls and paint them themselves. I have done that myself with silicones and BJD's, but I keep them for myself.

The prototype is usually the first since it is completed to help sell the edition, as with vinyl editions. It is often more expensive since it has been carefully completed as the best example of how a sculpt will look painted. Of course, ‘best’ is a subjective term in art dolls since preferences for coloring vary. There tends to be a much wider variety of completed versions if the sculpting artist sells blank kits versus completing the edition themselves.
