Eva Helland Dolls - mainly silicone but all welcome

Post by cookielover »

Note: I will continually add information as i get it.... so come back and look again and maybe bump it so others will see it! Next I will be putting up information on the Helland body!

I have collected many different kinds of dolls for many years and one of the things I have appreciated was the availability of information on them.... especially the older ones. There are new collectors who are beginning to look at silicone dolls. Even though many of them were produced in the last 10 or so years, they were often in small additions and there is little information on them if the artist does not have a web site and a list of her/his dolls. This is NOT a sales site.... it is an information site to educate new and old collectors about the silicone dolls that have been produced by Eva Helland. Hopefully someone will do the same thing for the OOAKs in clay as well as her commercial dolls. Here are pictures of some of her creations: http://www.doll-fan.com/viewtopic.php?f ... +silicones

Here is a good article on Eva January 1, 2008: http://www.dollsmagazine.com/artistlimi ... dolls.html

Hope this works. Here is a tribute to Eva that was done in March 2016. http://www.doll-fan.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=367508

I will keep an ongoing list which I will edit as more information comes to me. Let me know if I make mistakes. So here goes. The information I want to post will look like this. If I use a picture and it is yours and you want me to take it down, please let me know. Hope this helps others to enjoy Eva's wonderful silicones.

Here is some information copied from Eva's website and saved by a DF member Nadia who has shared it and more.....thanks so much!

EVA WEBSITE INFORMATION

"Eva truly enjoys creating silicone babies. The realism that can be felt in this medium is just wonderful. Each baby is available to collectors in limited editions of 10 to 25 babies. 3-4 artist proofs are made of each baby. Every baby comes to the collector signed, numbered and dated. Silicones range in price from $2,000 to $2,750.
Silicone babies have wigs, rooted, or hand applied hair. Each is individually painted resulting in no two babies being identical. All Eva babies feature her trademark on the back of their neck, a footprint along with the initials EH."

And if you would like to see a great thread on Eva's OOAKs..... look at this one: http://www.doll-fan.com/viewtopic.php?f ... d+silicone

ASHTON DRAKE HELLAND SILICONES...never produced for sale

This is an area of great interest to me. These are silicone babies that are marked AD and yet never really available to the public. They show up every once in awhile. So far I have documented three (all owned by the same person). How did they come to be? Are there more, and if so please contact me. Why were they never put up for sale. I happen to have a pair of AA vinyl Lorna Miller Sands babies marked AD but never produced for sale. The year on them is 2005 which is also the year on at least one of the Helland silicones.... what happened in that time period?

Here is Eva marked 2004 . She comes on a Helland body but it is not signed

Here are two more unmarketed Helland Silicones by AD --

RESIN BABIES

See the Triplets above.... made in Silicone and in resin.

Aiko Sakura

Image

Year introduced: January 2007
Number in issue: 10
Pourer: Barbara Lefler of Multiplicity Casting Studios
Description: Eva's first resin doll. See the article above for more information.

THE EVA BODY

Here are some closeup pictures of the body Eva used on most of her dolls. These are courtesy of Erin Hamby's Elora. There are some variation in the bodies.... have seen them without the arms sewn to the body in two places. Also you will see teddy bear joints on the Tiny Footprint pair which were more commercial. Let me know any variations you might find. Eva always signed her bodies (in the back, upper shoulder on left hand side) and used a hard to find material to make them. No nylon or plastic ties were used.... only a nylon thread (sort of like upholstery I think). The sculpting of the body was done with the same nylon thread. Sometimes there was glue used to keep the head, arms and legs in place....other times .... no glue. The head was attached from the inside of the body (I am pretty sure). Here is a picture of Hevinly's head (she was on a replacement body).... note how long the neck is and how there is no channel in the neck Also note the seam across the upper body is only in the front.

Image

Image

I am working on the pattern for the body..... it seems to be four pieces cut exactly the same and then a tuck across the front. If there is a seam across the upper body.... as shown in Elora's picture above.... that would mean there are two pieces of pattern..... rather than the one piece of pattern (the tuck one). Although it would be just as easy to just make a "seam" (like a long tuck) across the body. The arms and legs are attached with the nylon thread and with the same cloth. The cloth has been attached to the legs and arms on the inside, secured with the nylon thread, pulled up, and sewn tightly with no filler and then attached to the body. I think the bodies were only filled with polyfil...... at least the ones I have seen.... no weights. Here again I would be interested in knowing what others have observed. The sculpting would have been done with the same nylon thread.

I believe Sun-Lee is actually by Adrie Stoete (if it's the asian cutie I am thinking of).

This is a great idea but it should be done for ALL babies from ALL artists and in all mediums. Like one big (updated frequently), list. For vinyl kits too especially. The only site with a list that has been done for vinyl kits hasn't been updated in about 4 or 5 years. Been a few new kits since then..... lol!

Hi, there is little Aiko in resin too
If you have a look in my gallery on here (link under my siggy)
I think I must have a picture of most of them lol
It's not always obvious but there are two pages in my silicones by Eva, look for the "next" button
I think I have a picture of all of them
Also Aiko under "resins"
You are most welcome to save and reproduce here...

What you say is very true.... there does need to be information about all babies.... and people on DF are the ones most likely to have the needed information. It can not, however, be one big list since no one would have the time, energy, or interest to keep up with that big list. There needs to be various lists that are maintained by individuals who have interest and experience in a particular area. So if you are interested in a particular artist and their work..... start now and do it. I decided on Helland Silicones because I am interested in them and wanted to know previous ones she did. It seems to me that there can be all sorts of lists about a particular artist.... i.e. Lorna Miller Sands silicones; Lorna Miller Sands OOAKs; Lorna Miller sands vinyls, Lorna Miller Sands Resins, etc. etc. I think a list of just "resins" for instance might really get out of hand. Someone else needs to do a Eva Helland OOAKS list (do I see hands). I don't know how many resins she did... do know the Triplets came in resin and at least one other..... if only a few..... may just add to my list and include "silicones and resins" ---- but think of the list of "Helland vinyl" including kits and commercial ones.... my heart is beating fast. :grouphug: Ruth

Your "wanted to know" is just like everyone else..... and I started this thread because I believe the information is out there..... and if someone just tells one fact.... it is one more fact we know.....pourers are particularly hard to know....and kind of silicone.... but someone does know.... hugs, Ruth

Love seeing all the Helland babies. They are so special especially since Eva isn't sculpting anymore. Here is a picture of my Helland silicones along with Sun Lee by Adrie. I also recently got Micha. Need to take a picture of her with the others.
